In this tutorial I’ll be demonstrating how you can take a single object and repeat it along a path in Affinity Designer. This can be useful in creating fun patterns and decorative borders.
To accomplish this, we’ll need to create an object to repeat and then make it into a Textured Image Brush.
Once made into a brush, it can be applied to any shape as a stroke, and you can even draw with it using the Vector Brush Tool.
Step 1: Export the object as a PNG image
In the first part of the tutorial I’ll be going over how to create this simple Roman-style object that can be used to make decorative borders:
If you want to skip this part of the lesson then you can simply download the PNG image above and use it for the next step.
Step 2: Make a Textured Image Brush from the PNG image
Now, all we have to do is head over to the Brushes menu, click the hamburger menu icon in the top-right corner, and select Make Textured Image Brush.
When prompted, locate the PNG image you’ve saved on your hard drive and select it.
Step 3: Open the brush settings and change the Body setting to Repeat
Once added to the list of brushes, double-click the brush to open the brush editor:
Locate the Body setting and change it to Repeat. This will make is so that your object is repeated along the path instead of being stretched.
Step 4: Apply the brush to an object to repeat it
Now, all you have to do is create a shape and then click on the brush in the menu to apply it, and the object will be repeated along the path of the shape:
You can also grab the Vector Brush Tool and use it to draw brush strokes with the repeating object.
