New Icons for Inkscape

New Icons for Inkscape 848 310 Nick Saporito

After 5+ years, it’s safe to say I’ve grown tired of looking at the dated clipart-style icons used in Inkscape, so I decided to try my hand at redesigning them. Inkscape is powerful software capable of taking market share away from Adobe’s Illustrator, so I think it should look the part.

The goal with these designs was to create something simple, sleek, effective, and a little more professional looking. Due to time restraints, I’ve only redesigned the tool icons for the time being, but here’s what I was able to come up with…

New Icons Designs for Inkscape

And here’s how they look once installed on theย dark theme

I also created an alternate variation for those of you who prefer the light theme…

To download and use these icons yourself, first please make sure to download the proper icon pack for the version of Inkscape you’re using. If not, you will end up with missing icons and broken image links.

For Version 0.91 and Below

If you would like to use these icons on Inkscape version 0.91 and below, here’s aย download for both the dark and light theme versions: Inkscape-Icons.zip

For Version 0.92

If you’re using version 0.92, make sure to download this file instead: Version-92.zip

Installing on Ubuntu

If you’re using Ubuntu, in order to install these icons you’ll simply have to take the icons file and place it in a specific folder, then rename it “icons.svg”.

Go to your home folder, then go to View > Show Hidden Files. Once the hidden folders appear, go to .config > inkscape > icons. Once you’re in the icons folder, drag whichever icon set you want to use into the folder and change the name of it to “icons.svg”.ย The new icons will display when you next launch Inkscape.

If you want to remove them and revert back to the original icons that came with Inkscape, just delete that icons.svg file from that folder.

Installing on Windows

Installingย these icons in a Windows environment is similarly easy. Open up file explorer, then click on Computer > OS (C:) > Program Files > Inkscape > share > icons.

Once you’re in the icons folder, scroll down until you find the icons.svg file. Icons.svg is the file Inkscape references to display icons on the user interface. Rename this file to “icons_old.svg”, then take your new Inkscape icon pack of choice (icons_dark.svg or icons_light.svg) and click & drag it into the icons folder. Once it’s in the folder, rename it to “icons.svg”. Inkscape will now reference that file and the updated icons will be displayed the next time you open Inkscae.

If you want to revert back to the original Inkscape icons, simply rename icons.svg back to “icons_dark” or “icons_light”, then rename “icons_old.svg” back to “icons.svg”.

Whichever file is named “icons.svg” is going to be the file that Inkscape references when displaying the icons.

*UPDATE*

I’ve been getting a lot of feedback from Windows users claiming this method does not work for them, which I’ve noticed too when trying to install them on my Windows 8 machine. In this instance, the best way would be to open the default icons.svg file, delete the icons, then copy & paste the new icons from my icons.svg file into the original file, then save. That did the trick for me. Just make sure to create a backup of the original icons.svg file in case you change your mind down the road or something goes wrong in the process.

Enjoy!

Feel free to use and share these icons however you’d like. If you have any questions, suggestions, or feedback on the designs, leave a comment below.

Keep sharing the love, Great great work!

I enjoy your videos on YouTube and those icons are simply sharp.

I am currently working on my own business consulting logo but once I start with clients, i would love to use your services.

    Once again, thanks.

A little hint: if you put these icons into your user-space instead of into the Inkscape-shared-folder, you get all the icons from the icon-set plus all the icons that might be missing from the default icons.

    The user-space icon-directory would be:

    Windows: C:\Users\[YOUR USER]\AppData\Roaming\inkscape\icons
    Linux: $HOME/.config/inkscape/icons/
    Mac: don’t know yet ๐Ÿ™

Hi, I am using your icons since I follow your videos. But today I wanted to download them, and instead of being your custom icons, they are the default icons. Could you update your files ? Or is it an issue from me ? O_o

Yes I can assure you that I have not included anything malicious with these files, and my site has great security so I know nothing has been attached to them externally. As for Mac – I’m not sure to be honest. I haven’t used Inkscape on Mac. Sorry!

First, I want to mention that your icons look awesome!
But I cant figure out why they dont appear in inkscape on my system… I’m using inkscape 0.91 on kde neon, a unix based os and I followed the installation instructions correctly; I downloaded the zip archive from the link on this site, unzipped it and copied the icons_dark.svg file in the .config/inkscape/icons folder:

    $cd ~/downloads
    $unzip InkIcons2017.zip
    $cp ~/downloads/InkIcons2017/icons_dark.svg ~/.config/inkscape/icons
    $cd ~/.config/inkscape/icons
    $mv icons_dark.svg icons.svg

But that doesnt work for me; i dont see ANY difference, just the old, boring looking standard inkscape icons…

After a few research, i noticed that the default inkscape icon file is located at /usr/share/inkscape/icons. I of cause made a backup and finally replaced it with your icon file. I thought that has to fix it or at least cause an error… BUT that’s not the case. I again dont see any difference. Where do these icons come from? I also tried to restart my computer but it had no effect.

I hope anyone has an idea how to fix my problem.

Hi ! If it still the case, you should try to edit your preferences within Inkscape. Go to “Edit > Preferences”. Then in the “System” tab. From here you can see a field named Icon themes (or something like that, mine is not english). In this field you might want to edit paths, delete some or add yours.
I hope it will help you.

Why can’t I see the icons.svg file (only “icons” without the .svg)

Been at this for 8 hours and still no dice. Can anyone help? Many thanks.

The .svg part of the file name is hidden by default on windows.
Generally the part after the last point in filenames, even tough its hidden on windows, defines the type of any file.
The windows file manager has an extra column for that.

You can just take the icon file… The .svg part exitsts, but is hidden by your file manager.

    Nick, you wrote:

Once youโ€™re in the icons folder, scroll down until you find the icons.svg file.

I got as far as the last step but I can’t see the “icons.svg” file. I can only see the “icons” file (without the “.svg”). I would so dearly love to work this out – been at it for 7 hours now. Could someone please help? I’m on Windows 10.

I love the icon pack btw it looks insanely good miles better than the stock icons.

Just a quick tip to help out for those who work on inkscape 0.91 through OSX using quartz 11 the folder structure is a bit different but the icon pack still works great. The only missing icons are Templates icon in the file menu and the snap text anchors and baselines.

The folder structure for OSX goes:

    Applications/Contents/Resources/share/inkscape/icons

From then on the steps are the same as in the tutorial renaming the new file to icons and the old one to whatever you’d like so you can revert back

  • Dan

There are also some icons which are not included in the icons.svg file. The save, save as, cut, paste, swatch icons I can’t find anywhere. Does anyone know how these could be changed?

  • Dan

ok so i just found a file called symbolic_icons.svg in the icons folder. It has everything in modern style, as from the preview of 0.92. They are also coloured with a swatch so u can change all of them at once. (this after spending basically most of today editing most of the other icons to try to match with the same theme as yours here.

There are actually one or two missing from this file, and to be honest I like yours better. These ones still seem a bit clunky and cartoonish rather than professional, so i’ll probably continue with what i’m trying to do anyway…
