Brand Style Guides: What They Are And Why They’re Important 1024 576 Nick Saporito

When developing a visual identity for your company, it’s important to ensure that every customer touchpoint looks consistent. Ideally, you want your website, social media, and company stationery to look like they all belong to the same entity. This is where a brand style guide comes in handy, and in this article I’ll be breaking down what they are and why they’re useful.

In short, a brand style guide is the official documentation for your company’s visual identity. It serves as a blueprint for how your brand should look and feel across all mediums so that everyone working on your team, from designers to marketers, is on the same page.

Why A Brand Style Guide?

Your logo is the foundation of your company’s visual identity and sets the tone for the rest of your branding, but the style guide is the instruction booklet that tells you how.

It’s a shareable (PDF) document that lets you present a cohesive, professional image and can be easily distributed to staff, team members, associates, and the press.

Information Included

Style guides contain crucial information about a brand’s design properties and how they should be applied. Some of the information included is as follows:

  • Brand Palette: color codes and Pantones used in your logo and how they should be applied across your branding in various contexts.
  • Typography: fonts used in your logo and text stylings for headers, sub headers, and body text.
  • Usage Guidelines: best practices for sizing, spacing, and utilizing color in conjunction with your logo and various design elements.
  • Applications: examples of how your branding guidelines look when applied in various contexts.

Without a brand style guide, it’s easy to end up with design assets that are all over the place. You’ll have mismatched type, inconsistent spacing, and improper use of color. This lack of consistency across various design assets can detract from a professional image.
